DVD players are instruments which play not only DVD video but also discs adhering to the standard DVD audio; two distinct, incompatible standards. In general, DVD players are viewed on a television screen though there are some new portable DVD’s with a screen attached.
It’s common of DVD players to be able to play audio (CD, CDDA, MP3) and video CD’s (VCD) Many of the newer model DVD players also play the MPEG-4 ASP video comp format, which are increasingly popular on the internet. Most of the worlds DVD players are produced in China (70%) Free DVD players are the things which are won on game shows or that exist in people’s pipe dreams. Unfortunately for most, DVD players of any sort of reliability will continue to set you back a couple hundred dollars. Make no mistake; these are not the “least expensive” model DVD on the market. However, if you don’t want your discs to be eaten, your player to overheat and malfunction, the disc to get stuck on a screen that can’t be removed from your TV (I’ve heard, or experienced, them all!) you’d best be wise to not short yourself on the front side. This fact of DVD players expense is part of the reason that many people are opting out of DVD players altogether and hooking up their laptop computer, desktop hard drive, to their televisions; the quality is that good in their computers that they’d rather try and jimmy it in that manner. Another popular activity is hooking up your video game system as your DVD player. A PlayStation, Nintendo Wii, or X-Box is a better quality alternative than an inexpensive, problematic DVD. If you buy foreign DVD’s online, you may be required to buy a DVD player from that country. France, for example, has another ‘region code’ that makes their DVD’s unplayable on American DVD players. However, American DVD’s are becoming the last bastion of this type of restriction on foreign DVD’s as many other countries players play American DVD’s; what’s the deal with that? There are free DVD player downloads available from many manufacturers websites. These downloads you may feel are silly, but many will offer you better service and performance and extend the life of your moderately priced to expensive player. Free DVD player software is available on many others’s websites or directly from the company; particularly if there’s a misnomer in their technologies out of the factory. If you’re looking for DVD player reviews, check the industry magazines and websites specifically for their latest reviews on the newest units. Most magazines are impartial and will give you only the proper information. It’s important to be wary of a stores catalog though; particularly if they seem to be leaning towards a few particular brands and not saying much else about others. Some catalogs don’t even have some brands they carry in their stores listed in their catalogs! This obviously has to do with the stores relationship to particular brands. So do your homework! You want to be able to enjoy your movies for years to come; not out shopping for a new model in the new model year!
