Quilting is a time honored sewing method which is performed either by hand, sewing machine, or Longram quilting system. You may have had a time honored favorite quilt as a child; perhaps one given to you when you were born; perhaps from a grandmother. Maybe even your mother made it for you; rocking you to sleep inside of her, on a favorite rocking chair you’d grown to know and love in her final trimester. If you’re young enough, though, maybe not; as today’s woman works all the way up until her expected due date; getting cut throat and threatening across the business table as her water breaks; going into labor in the middle of a meeting; then finishing up the meeting on conference call in the ambulance in order to maintain order and seal the deal.
Okay, maybe that is a little bit exaggerated. But the dwindling number of parents able to commit the time to actually being parents and make things like a quilt from scratch is drawing ever smaller. That’s a sad state of affairs as there is nothing like the warm enrapture of a mothers quilt on a blustery winter morning; or taking a freshly washed quilt from the dryer and wrapping yourself in it. Quilting dates back as far as the Crusades; even ancient Egyptians were thought to have woven something similar to quilts. In American Colonial times, most able bodied women were spinners, weavers, clothing makers, and quilt makers in their own regard. If you are lucky enough to be able to commit to a quilt for your little one, there are numerous free quilt patterns available on the internet. Just doing a quick search engine search pops up hundreds of thousands for you to view, download, and begin working on. Quilt patterns are available in many different styles, looks, and for your baby, may be ‘traditionally gender appropriate’ (in the event your conservative parents come over to baby sit) Free baby quilt patterns are available on the internet, in magazines, or books in a variety of styles with a variety of designs. If you don’t see anything you like online or you need greater selection there are magazines and books which offer easy quilting patterns for your enjoyment. If you’re on a fixed budget you can even go to the library (!) and take out a quilting pattern book for your own child’s quilt.
